THE COLLECTION
Windham Public Library has approximately 40,000
volumes, over 3300 videos, 1300 audio books and subscriptions to over
100 periodicals and newspapers.
ADULT BASIC EDUCATION (ABE)/ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL)
The Windham Public Library
has recently acquired a new collection of materials geared toward adults
learning to read and ESOL students, as well as GED preparation
materials. The collection's foundation is of books written at a low
reading level, but with high adult content. The collection includes
both fiction and non-fiction, covering subjects such as romance,
mysteries, westerns, and life skills. Materials specific to ESOL
students include books about United States culture, geography, and study
guides for the United States Citizenship Exam. You can find these
materials in our catalog by searching for call numbers beginning with
"LIT".
AUDIO BOOKS
Books on tape and compact disc are
popular and include best sellers, classics, and non-fiction. They are
available in both the adult and children's sections. You can also
search our catalog for call numbers beginning with "CD" and "CAS" for
the adult section audio materials and "J CD" and "J CAS" for the
children's section audio materials.
BEGINNER
READERS
This special section is devoted to books for
readers who are just beginning to read independently. Books range from
10, 20, or 30 word books to beginning chapter books. This area is
especially helpful for kindergarten to second grade patrons.
CALDECOTT
AWARDS
Each year the Caldecott Medal is awarded by
the American Library Association to the artist (citizen or resident of
the U. S.) "of the most distinguished American Picture Books for
children published in the Untied States during the preceding year."
Books that have received this distinction are kept together in one
location. A complete listing is available from the American Library
Association.
DVD
Both the adult section and the children's
section offer DVDs. You can also search our catalog for call numbers
beginning with "DVD" for the adult section materials and "J DVD" for
children's section materials.
GENEALOGY
The library has a selection of local history
and genealogy book located at the end of the Maine Collection Reference
for those patrons interested in researching Windham's history. You can
also search our catalog for call numbers beginning with "GC" for
genealogy materials.
LARGE PRINT
BOOKS
Fiction and non-fiction books are in the Large
Print section. The large print Reader's Digest magazine is shelved
with the regular print magazines You can also search our catalog for
call numbers beginning with "LP" for Large Print materials.
MAGAZINES
The library carries about one hundred
different magazines to serve both adults and children. You can also
search our catalog by magazine title.
MAINE
COLLECTION
A selection of over 1800 books, fiction and
non-fiction, by Maine authors. Please note that fiction by Maine authors
is interfiled with the fiction collection. A green strip on the spine
identifies these books by Maine authors. You can also search our
catalog for call numbers beginning with "ME COLL" for Maine materials.
MUSIC
Selections are available on both cassettes and
compact disc in the adult and children's section of the library. You can
also search our catalog for call numbers beginning with "CD MUS" and "CAS
MUS" for the adult section materials and "J CD MUS" and "J CAS MUS" for
the children's section materials.
NEWBERY AWARDS
Each year the Newbery Medal is awarded by the

form falls in the calendar year just elapsed." Books that have received

The library has the following newspapers
available. American Journal, Lake Region Weekly,
Maine Sunday
Telegram, Maine Times, Portland
Press Herald, Wall Street
Journal, Windham Independent. Many other newspapers, both local and
world wide, can be searched through ProQuest, part of
MARVEL, Maine's Virtual
Library.
REFERENCE
The library has over 700 reference
items which can be searched in our catalog by call number "REF", "ME
COLL REF", or "REF J". There are several specialized reference series
including Man, Myth and Magic; the Encyclopedia of Social Issues, and
American Immigrant Cultures.
TEENS
Fiction and non-fiction materials for teens are
located on the second floor. You can also search for these items in our
catalog by the call numbers beginning with "TEEN" .
VIDEOS
Over 2000 educational, entertainment
and special interest videos for both children and adults. You can also
search our catalog for call numbers beginning with "VID" for the adult
section materials and by "J VID" for the children's section materials.
We also loan Polaroid cameras and have a
clothing pattern and jigsaw puzzle exchange!
