The Windham Public Library has a partnership with Portland Public Library (PPL) in order to issue Portland Public Library cards, available at our library. We are happy to offer this convenient service to our patrons. Not only will you be able to borrow materials from any of the PPL locations, but having a PPL library card opens the door to a wealth of information through a variety of online databases.
Can I use my PPL card to check-out books at the Windham Public Library?
No. The Windham Public Library and the Portland Public Library are on different library systems, using different software. But if there is an item at PPL that you would like sent to your Windham Public Library account, you might be able to request it through MaineCat. Contact the library for assistance if you need it.
Why would I want to get a PPL card if I can’t use it to check out books here?
There are many online resources that PPL offers which Windham Public Library is not able to afford. Access to these databases is free to anyone with a valid Portland Public Library card, and most of them can be used from the comfort of your own home computer (or a public computer within our library). Just a few of the databases are:

- Job Search and Career Skills
- Maine News : The MaineNews Index Online
- Tumblebooks for Kids
- Learn-a-Language programs
- Learn-a-Test programs
- Business Research from Mergent/Moody’s Online and other references
- Overdrive Maine Infonet Download Library : audio books and e-books *yes, you can have a separate PPL account!
- Genealogy information from HeritageQuest and Ancestry Plus *available from within the Portland Public Library only

Plus, having a PPL card allows you to borrow books from any of the Portland Public Library locations. If you are someone who works in or around Portland, or someone who doesn’t mind driving in town, having a PPL card will expand your options for finding and getting that book, audio or movie that you want.
How do I get a PPL card at Windham Public Library?
Any resident of Cumberland or York County, is eligible for a Portland Public Library card. To sign up for one at Windham, simply bring a Maine driver’s license, or two other forms of ID with your name and current address. Those applicants between the ages of 12-18 must show a photo school ID and have a parent or guardian co-sign the form.
